He went to an international high school. Jack said his parents “definitely want me to go to grad school, as all Chinese parents do.” As one of the only Chinese people in his major, he has no trouble making friends. He is used to learning how to make friends after attending an international high school, opening up his possibilities for college. “I actually do not have a really big connection with the other Chinese students here… this year, including me, it’s like six Chinese students in our department and the rest, it’s either the rest of my friends from high school.” He spends his a lot of his time learning Japanese, watching Japanese anime, and with his friends in his Japanese club.</image:title>

There’s too much respect ot play around… everyone’s dad from home are the money makers so a lot of my friends from home have to call their dads ‘sir.’”</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Not Just A Stereotype - Bei Luo, or ‘Robbie’ stands on the grass in front of the student center. Robbie is studying mechanical and electrical engineering. “At the first time, it’s hard to say ‘hi, nice to meet you,’ to a person you don’t know before, but right now, I think I’m fine,” he said. “I don’t really have adjusting time, for me personally, like I’m super comfortable living here… They do want me to go to grad school, but they also want me to have working experience before going.” His parents want him to go to America for education because that is where they believe the best education is and where their friends’ kids went. Being himself in China “really depends on which area you are in. I haven’t been back there in quite a long time… I’m quite outgoing. I can sacrifice myself if it will make everybody else happy… I don’t really need to find a Chinese person. They find me.” Robbie sometimes goes out of his way to avoid conflict. He believes this makes him more approachable. His parents taught him ‘a lot of manners stuff. What you should or shouldn’t do–it makes you a good person. You have to be a kind person, and you have to have good manners… you have to be respectful.” He finds difficulty being with other Asians. “One problem I’m facing is if I was surrounded by Asians or Chinese peoples, Americans, like, they don’t want to contact with me… I introduce my friends from different groups.”</image:title>

When you say ‘Cambodian,’ a lot of people think ‘Columbian’ cause people don’t know where Cambodia is, usually… but a lot of people just assume that I’m just Mexican… I thought it would be something that happens once or twice, but it happens so often. It’s crazy. It bothers me.” “I think I’m close to my parents in a respectful and thoughtful way… but they’re not like my buddies. I’m not gonna treat them like they my buddy or my friend. <image:caption>Alexander and Ray talk and do the dishes together. Alexander “Xander” Anise’s name comes from his great-great grandfather changed his first name to his last name. Xander is half Egyptian, half Cambodian and was born in the US and moved to Dubai, Abu Dhabi. English is his first language. He has more of a cultural difference at home when speaking rather than experiencing a language barrier. Rapeepat “Ray” Phanratanamala’s name is long because “all Thai names are distinct. It’s illegal to have the same name as someone else. It’s also a class thing.” You can tell what business they own and how rich their family is. Is from Bangkok, Thailand. Thai is Ray’s first language. “I find more of a language barrier in Thailand because I was always in an international school, and then I went to boarding school near Boston. Thai people can tell I have an accent. Both parents want their children to go to grad school. Earlier on in Xander’s life, he was diagnosed with ADHD and his parents became less strict, focusing less on “grades, it’s more like, life-ing.” For Ray, his parents raised him to believe grades in general “add up to my character… so I do want the best for myself. I take it strictly for myself.” “My parents are the same,” added Xander. Xander is expected to get “a well-paying job, for sure,” but Ray’s dad said he will always be there to financially support him, “which kind of makes me not want that even more because he’s never told anyone else that.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Xander sits in his bedroom with Ray and a stuffed animal. Neither are expected to go to grad school because of the architectural degree. Ray is the only one in architecture in his family. For Ray, the Asian stereotype “creates a barrier… you become a little insecure and you try to push this Asian stereotype away from you and try to fit in as much as you can and I see that a lot with the college kids here… but now I just embrace who I am.” “Especially this house, especially I relate with Zander most. Sometimes, Americans just don’t understand us, whereas we understand them and us because we’ve experienced, we’ve lived it… with things like sharing food in restaurants… in other parts of the world, we go to a lot of plates and share it,” said Ray. “Here in the US a lot of people are very culturally centered and not really willing to accept new things. You see that in a lot of the friends I do here. They say, ‘I’m going to go do something because my grandfather did it.’ In tradition, there’s usually growth, but I feel like a lot of times here in the US there isn’t much growth… a lot of people here prefer to be comfortable… I think a lot of Americans should try to educate themselves a bit about more of the rest of the world so they can accommodate people who come and visit because I know a lot of people here who don’t feel welcomed,” said Xander. Ray added, “if you’re not willing to branch out and try new things, you don’t need to like, speak out… just like, you’re less cultured so just try to respect other cultures.”</image:caption>

His parents have always wanted him to attend the highest-ranking school possible, so he attends Syracuse University. “I enjoy the feeling and the people University has,” he said. He wants to start either a high-tech or weapons company in China someday after living in America for a little while after college. “To me, it’s so big difference between China and America’s social environment, just based on the social framework… You can feel the difference human to human.” “I don’t feel angry or argue with people… It really is not about two languages… Like, if I don’t understand, I will just directly ask. I don’t afraid to be embarrassed… when I look back in the years I got in America, there’s nothing like it… It really is not about two languages. Just, the people I met just… talk it out… we actually solve it… it’s giving the feeling they’re so generous… if they are a good person, a kind person, I can make friends with them.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Not Just A Stereotype - Chenyi Feng sits on the floor of her room on a rainy day. She chose “Chloe” as her English name because she attended an international school. ‘GaoKao,’ the immensely intense and important exam in China, puts a lot of pressure on students. Chloe, studying advertising and marketing, said, “We don’t want to take this pleasure, and if a family can provide us a good experience by going abroad, it’s more common. I think I’m very lucky my parents chose this… I think I have a home here.” Chloe’s sister is 14 years older and has supported Chloe in her acclimation to America. Like many other Chinese parents, higher education is thought to provide a better life. “I can learn a lot rather than learning in China because Chinese have a lot of rules to follow… they think that higher education lets me have a better life. I can earn money, and I can marry a better man. When I just come here, have a really hard time speak English. I know I have a lot of problems with my grammar, and I’m shy too, you know. I’m afraid that people cannot understand what I’m saying… I think almost all of my friends are Chinese… we have the same hobby… we don’t have the cultural difference. It is easy to make friends with Chinese.” If people from other cultures can understand her, “we can talk and communicate. It’s a good way to make me more confidence. I think Chinese people are all shy… we are afraid to make mistake. We don’t talk to others because we are afraid that people cannot understand us and we will be embarrassing. I think more and more Chinese people want to make friends with people from other cultures.”</image:title>

Her parents encouraged her to pursue something in business or media. She went to a very small high school in Tennessee to avoid ‘GaoKao’ and because “high school in China is very intense.” Annie wanted to “have more variety in class and to know different countries and different cultures. I want to know how other countries teach class. “Both my parents, they want me to attend until graduate school because if I didn’t attend… it is really hard to find a good job.” Socially, “I will not be the first to talk to someone,” but Annie is open to making friends with anyone. In China, you don’t talk about politics, but “you do in America.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anderson's Farm Market opens at 9 AM, with deliveries coming in around 6-7 AM. The DeHartt's humble listing of various fundraisers and events they have hosted through Anderson's Farm Market includes one for Billy McConnell, the son of Bill McConnell, the owner of the Courtland Crush, an NCAA-sanctioned member of the MLB-endorsed NY Collegiate Baseball League. "They're like family," Jenn said. Suffering from two kidneys that were not processing protein properly, Billy received his cousin's kidney. Bloodwork was the only requirement after his surgery, and Billy took down his GoFundMe page immediately after funds were raised. "We raised a lot of money for him" with our fundraisers, said Jenn. He was in the Air Force and now has civilian contracts for them. That was one of many fundraisers Anderson's put on. "In his words, 'we're good people,'" said Jenn, as she recalled how they fundraised for Paul Sandy, the Chief of Police of Cortland, when he had cancer, and he and his family were doing a collection for medical bills. Most of Anderson's fundraising during COVID-19 was for the fire department. The Fire Department usually did its fundraising through chicken barbeques. Still, COVID's negative effect on fundraising spotlighted Anderson's Farm Market fundraising events as they helped fulfill the Fire Department's money-making efforts. Anderson's also played a massive role in providing safe, outside activities for their community, and "everybody loved it." They put on a fundraiser for the Sheriff's Department, one for First Responders, another for the emergency room at the hospital, and many more.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Matt and Jenn stand in front of Anderson’s Farm Market on a chilly day. Jenn packs a special lunch for each drive to pick up produce, stopping on the way back to snack in the truck before driving back to unload the truck. These drives are a rare occasion of alone time they get together. “Things change, you get bigger. Not that we’re huge, but we’re bigger than just one person,” Matt said about Jenn’s father and the growth of the market since him. “ My father is a very simple man,” Jenn continues, “But even now, Dad could not run the store that it is now. We’ve grown since he left… If we stayed the same, we would have gone broke.” While Jenn’s family has owned various stores for roughly 119 years, there is no long-held expectation of keeping a business within the family. However, owning and running a business is where Matt and Jenn seem to have found a particular passion. Jenn’s father always told her, “You guys own it for as long as you want, and don’t feel bad if you end up selling it.” Matt and Jenn have developed a close relationship with local law enforcement. In gratitude, they hosted fundraising efforts for the local police station in 2020 during the Defund the Police movement. This drew backlash and threats from online sources, including the Cortland BLM chapter. "There were some of our customers who came to our aid, but we were just like, we don't need to put that out there. That's not what this is about. This is not a political thing... it was just a thank you" for the help and precautionary protection from the police. "We were burgled... that's fun to say... anyways, we just didn't need to make a big deal about it," said Jenn. Fundraising is "a decision that needs to make sense to us that's personal" for the store, Matt said. Jen continued, "we were afraid. When those comments came out, I had friends that followed those pages just to know what was going on," and followed up with the police to ensure the safety of their store.</image:caption>

To save money and food from being wasted, Anderson’s bags veggies that are not the quality customers demand and sells them for around a dollar each. Matt and Jenn’s opinions on higher education rest upon each child’s desire to pursue a degree or enter the workforce. No one is pressured to join the family business. Yet, all have picked up shifts at the store, usually working at least a few days a week. Olivia has been working at the store for four years. Todd is bigger than life with much of his size due to his extensive knowledge of apples. Todd's apple orchard has been in business for 101 years. Jenn and Matt bring a hot lunch and freshly made cookies whenever they come up. His facility is capable of storing apples year-round. It's a highly controlled atmosphere. "We can cool these rooms down to less than 1% oxygen, so it kind of puts these apples to sleep," Todd said. One of the rooms can hold up to 600 bins. Each bin is roughly 20 bushels, or 800 lbs, making that room 480,000 lbs worth of apples that will be stored in a temperature-controlled room until the lot is sold to vendors across the county.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Matt unloads cartons of apples after he arrives at the Market with Jenn after picking them up from Cherry Lawn Farms on one of their last trips of the season. Driving to pick up eight crates of apples, approximately one-hundred-and-sixty bushels, takes four hours round trip. Every orchard in Upstate New York is scrambling to pick all their apples when they are ripe for filling their last orders of the season, or so they can store them for up to a year. Ever since Cherry Lawn Farms fell short of a driver, they have been taking their own pick-up truck and trailer to take the apples they ordered back to the market to sell, carefully picking how many apples of each variety to order for next week's pick-up based on customer demand.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"What we have found is that, whether we like it or not, people see us as the expert, quote-unquote, when it comes to produce. We would claim to be the fruit and vegetable people," said Matt, so he and Jenn are trying more and more to educate and make aware to their customers aware of when certain types of produce are going in and out of season. What is in season is very different compared to other regions. As the climate changes with global warming, Matt said he and the farmers he sources from find that the seasons shift earlier or later into the year, depending on the region, so predicting when a certain type of produce is in season is changing. Apple growers and Matt himself can see how the climate is changing by looking at its impact on apple patches. He goes down rabbit holes of information on the internet, so holding up the Honeycrisp Jenn grabbed for the drive back from Cherry Lawn Farms and analyzing its origin, structure, and where other apples of the sort are headed was a relatively easy task for Matt to achieve. While there are better apples, the Honeycrisp is hugely popular among consumers; a huge part of that is thanks to its name. "Outta all the varieties that are Honeycrisp, it's either the Sweet Tango or the Honeycrisp," said Matt. Cherry Lawn Farms is currently working on an internal red flush apple. "It's the name that grabs people... look at Honeycrisp. They couldn't have picked a better name than to market that apple cause, in my opinion, there are better apples," said Matt while talking to some of Cherry's workers.</image:caption>

The day is warm, but the temperature drops at night, creating an encroaching fog across the grounds until around 7:30 or 8 AM. In the late '60s, Anderson’s Farm Market owned a pumpkin patch until renting out the space in 2005. The land is now rented out and has remained a space for growing and picking pumpkins.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While cooking Swedish meatball soup, Jenn recalled her and Matt's beginnings. They’ve been linked since Jenn came back from college. “Every time I saw him, a little voice in my head said, that’s the guy you’re gonna marry,” and here they are, passing their twentieth anniversary this year. When she was back again from college, after seeing Matt push a cart past her, she “went home that night and wrote a letter to (her current boyfriend at the time), packed up all his stuff and sent it back to him. He was in the Air Force. I broke his heart so bad he named his first daughter after me. It was in the newspaper. Who wants to read that? I don’t want to read that!” Matt read the newspaper and came by the shop the next morning shaking. “Will you go out with me?” he asked. “It was the sweetest thing,” Jenn said, beaming from laughter. As a couple working together for many years and long working hours, “there are days I wanna kill him… He always jokes and is like, ‘You know I’m worth more dead than alive,’ and I’m like, if I wanted to kill ya, I know how to cook,” said Jenn, jokingly waiving a knife in her hand.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My parents flip through an old photo album. These pictures were taken by my dad when him and mom were walking around villages near my birthplace in Beihai, Guangxi, China. They wanted to capture what my hometown looked like when I was first born. For adoptees, seeing photos from the place you were born allows for an adoptee’s fantasy or imagination of what their family would look like if they weren’t adopted. Imagining a life that was taken from you can be very difficult for some adoptees. Transracial adoption, when adoptive parents are of a different race than the child(ren) they adopt, can make the adoptee view their parents as white saviors, or the parents themselves might view themselves as white saviors. For transracial adoptees, there is often a sense of gratefulness for being adopted into an American family.</image:caption>

The most common first assumption made by people when they first learn you were adopted is that your situation was so bad you had to be saved, so the world that an adoptee once might have lived in is now imagined as a much less developed place than it might be.</image:caption>

Adoption was more of a conversation in my childhood than it is for a lot of other adoptees. I joined T.A.G., The Adoption Group, a club centered around discussing adoption with other adoptees. Not everyone who was adopted would come, and I often did not participate until eleventh grade. My senior year of high school, I was running the club.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Elizabeth Irwin Lower and Middle school in the South Village of Manhattan, New York, is in session on March 8th, 2024. In the cab on the way to lower and middle school, taxi drivers would ask me where I’m from. My mom and I would take turns answering. Some mornings I felt perfectly comfortable talking with a stranger about my adoption, but other days, I could not believe someone would ask such a personal thing. I had grown up with the connotation of someone asking where I was from as a clear show of racism and disrespect, assuming that I do not belong in America with white parents. I thought people looked down on me and questions about my origin were not welcomed. Sometimes people have told me how good my accent is, but my first true language I ever spoke was English. My mother and I have been complemented on how much we look alike which made me think that you had to look like your parents to be theirs which made me angry.</image:caption>
